Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Smithers Campus, invites applications for a regular full-time Library Technician role commencing August 03, 2026. We are seeking a passionate individual who wants to join us in our goal to become the college of choice for experiential, place-based learning allowing students to learn both in the classroom and in the spectacular outdoor spaces that are so unique to this part of Canada. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff, Level 7: $2,186.10 biweekly plus a comprehensive benefits plan.

Duties: Working with technicians and librarians who provide users with bibliographic instruction and research guidance and assistance, this position provides library circulation functions, reference services, inter-library loan services, catalogue print and non-print learning and reference material.

Duties will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Assisting with supervision of students and monitoring student activities in the lab
  • Daily circulation of all print and non-print materials
  • General maintenance of the library facility in Prince Rupert
  • Inter-campus and inter-library loans
  • Reference service
  • Maintaining academic reserves
  • Recalling overdue material and creating invoices
  • Cataloguing and processing of all print and non-print items
  • Daily library system and equipment troubleshooting
  • All other tasks (of similar scope and complexity) as required

Qualifications

Qualifications/Skills:  A minimum of a Library Technician diploma as well as two years of experience in an academic library with exposure to all disciplines at the first-year university level. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office, Colleague, e-mail)
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to relate effectively with the public, students and other staff members
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate and meet public need and resolve complaints
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work efficiently under pressure with multiple deadlines and frequent interruptions
